Panasonic Group Mid- to long-term Environmental Vision ‘Panasonic GREEN IMPACT’ (Announced Jan 2022): By reducing our own CO2 emissions and contributing to societal CO2 reduction efforts while amplifying the effects of activities that facilitate the realization of a circular economy, we aim to achieve carbon neutrality and a circular economy and promote a ‘better life’ and a ‘sustainable global environment’. Carbon Neutrality Pathway: Targeting a CO2 reduction impact of more than 300 million tons by 2050. Circular Economy Pathway: Concept for circular economy initiatives toward a sustainable society.
Initiatives to raise awareness of Avoided CO2 Emissions: Avoided Emissions is the difference in CO2 emissions by society and customers, with/without the introduction of products/services to contribute to CO2 emissions reduction. Gain international recognition of the value of Avoided Emissions by engaging national governments, industry associations, and the financial community to drive discussions about their significance and need for standardization. Since the G7 Hiroshima Summit, avoided emissions have been widely adopted by financial institutions and others as an evaluation metric.
Panasonic Group Medium-Term Environmental Action Plan ‘GREEN IMPACT PLAN 2024’ (Announced July 2022): Establish concrete action plans to be achieved by 2024 and targets for 2030 as milestones toward the 2050 goals set by Panasonic GREEN IMPACT.
GREEN IMPACT PLAN 2024 Highlights: Year 3 Results. Carbon Neutral (OWN IMPACT): Increase of 38.11 million tons due to the inclusion of additional products subject to calculation. Net decrease of 19.01 million tons when using the same calculation method as FY2025. Progress in energy reduction/renewal: 45 net zero factories. Carbon Neutral (CONTRIBUTION IMPACT): Expansion and visualization progress, 53.25 million tons. Circular Economy: Recycling rate has been maintained at 99% or higher for 3 consecutive years. Circular economy initiatives have spawned two new ventures, for a cumulative total of 15 businesses. Recycled resin use fell short of target, reaching 45,000 tons over 3 years.
GREEN IMPACT PLAN 2024 Major Progress 1: Carbon Neutrality, OWN IMPACT. CO2 emissions from our own value chain (OWN IMPACT) increased by 38.11 million tons compared to FY2021 due to expansion of the calculation scope. Due to the expanded scope, the number of covered products has increased from 33 to 63. CO2 emissions were effectively reduced by 19.01 million tons when using the same calculation method as FY2021 and accounting for the expanded emissions calculation scope.
GREEN IMPACT PLAN 2024 Major Progress 2: Carbon Neutrality, OWN IMPACT, net zero factories. In FY2025, 13 factories were added, raising the total to 45 factories (target: 37 factories). Steadily advancing toward net zero emissions across all operating companies by FY2031.
GREEN IMPACT PLAN 2024 Major Progress 3: Carbon Neutrality, CONTRIBUTION IMPACT. Avoided CO2 emissions achieved through our products and services, contributing to overall societal CO2 emission reductions, came to 53.25 million tons—significantly exceeding our target (38.30 million tons). Major contributions by new air conditioning and refrigerator DC motors, and energy storage systems.
GREEN IMPACT PLAN 2024 Major Progress 4: Circular Economy Pathway. CE-type businesses now total 15 (target: 13), with new additions of the resource-saving modular equipment design for MULTISHAPE and TOUGHBOOK, and the LAUNDROOM washing machine sharing service.
GREEN IMPACT PLAN 2024 Major Progress 5: Initiated Process for TNFD Disclosure. To balance reduction of business risks with achievement of sustainable growth, we are systematically assessing risks and opportunities not only for climate change but also for natural capital such as biodiversity. Establishing 4 scenarios with an eye toward 2050: Identifying risks and opportunities for 2 critical scenarios and developing specific countermeasures. Further deepening our foundation to accelerate the creation of mid-term to long-term corporate value. (The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) is an international framework promoting disclosure of information on risks and opportunities related to natural capital)
GREEN IMPACT PLAN 2024 FY2026 Targets: Initiatives under the 3-year GREEN IMPACT PLAN 2024 have been completed. However, the PGI strategy will be updated in conjunction with the next mid-term plan, incorporating all Sustainability KPIs and targets. For FY2026, our goal is to extend GIP2024 by 1 year. FY31 targets remain unchanged.
Hideyuki Okunaga, Project Leader, Sustainability Management Project, Panasonic Holdings Co., Ltd. and Keiichiro Sonoda, General Manager, Quality & Environment Division, Panasonic Operational Excellence Co., Ltd. commented. About Pathway to Sustainability Management Evolution: ‘Our basic policy is now clearly stated as being: ‘To sustainably improve corporate value by contributing to a sustainable society.’ We have also begun visualizing the social impact generated through our business activities. These overarching strategies are communicated through our Integrated Report and Sustainability Site/Sustainability Data Book, which are designed to complement and reinforce each other, so please have a look.’ About Completion of 3-Year GREEN IMPACT PLAN 2024: ‘We achieved our net zero factory goal ahead of schedule and significantly exceeded targets for avoided CO2 emissions for customers and society, delivering steady results. Meanwhile, we will continue to address issues that have been identified, such as expanding the use of recycled resins, under our FY2026 targets, ‘GIP2024+1.’ Environmental initiatives are a fundamental premise of our business, so we will continue to contribute to the decarbonization of society.’
