Panasonic in Numbers: 20 Million Home Appliances Recycled

In May 2025, Panasonic Eco Technology Center Co., Ltd. (PETEC) reached a new milestone, having recycled a total of 20 million home appliances of four varieties (air conditioners, televisions, refrigerators, and washing machines) since it began operations in 2001 (24 years). Manufacturers whose products are collected and recycled are divided into two groups, A and B*. This marks the first time that a company in Group A has reached 20 million units recycled.

* Under Japan’s Home Appliance Recycling Law, manufacturers and recyclers are divided into Group A and Group B to efficiently carry out the recycling of home appliances. The Panasonic Group belongs to Group A.

PETEC recycles home appliances and turns them into new products, guided by the slogan “product to product.” PETEC blends thorough manual work with efficient technology to achieve high precision in its recovery of metals, resins, and other materials from end-of-life appliances, engaging in horizontal recycling, where resources recovered from products are reused in equivalent products.

PETEC is also creating an open and clean “showcase factory.” The factory welcomes approximately 10,000 visitors from Japan and overseas each year, sharing the importance of home appliance recycling, and in 2019 it was certified as the first Panasonic Group factory in Japan with net zero CO2 emissions*.

* Factories that achieved net zero CO2 emissions through the combined promotion of energy saving activities, the introduction of renewable energy, and the utilization of energy certificates and carbon credits.
