Tokyo, Japan, October 8, 2026 – Panasonic Corporation (Panasonic) announced that it will launch pilot projects in Vietnam and the Philippines to collect used air conditioners and explore opportunities for their refurbishment and recycling. The initiatives form part of the Panasonic Group's long-term environmental vision, Panasonic GREEN IMPACT (PGI), and are scheduled to run in Vietnam and the Philippines from October 2026 through the end of March 2027.

As economic growth drives the increased adoption of home appliances across ASEAN, establishing systems for their proper collection and treatment remains a challenge. Proper collection and treatment are particularly important for air conditioners because they contain refrigerants. Drawing on the home appliance recycling technologies and expertise it has developed in Japan, as well as its experience in selling refurbished products, Panasonic will use these pilot projects to promote the proper collection, treatment, refurbishment, and recycling of used air conditioners, thereby helping to ensure the effective use of resources.

In Vietnam, Panasonic Vietnam Co., Ltd. (PV) will collaborate with home appliance retailer Cao Phong Co., Ltd. to conduct the pilot project from October 8, 2026, through the end of March 2027. In the Philippines, Panasonic Manufacturing Philippines Corporation (PMPC) plans to conduct the pilot project in collaboration with a home appliance retailer from October 2026 through the end of March 2027. In each country, the project will target customers who purchase Panasonic products from participating retailers. Panasonic aims to collect between 500 and 1,000 used air conditioners in each country and examine a collection scheme that utilizes the retailers' sales networks. Panasonic will also assess the feasibility of recycling the collected air conditioners and using the resulting recycled materials in its own products. In the Philippines, Panasonic will also assess the feasibility of selling the collected air conditioners as refurbished products. These pilot projects will be conducted as part of the Ministry of the Environment's International Metal Resource Circulation Promotion Project.

Using the insights gained from the pilot projects in Vietnam and the Philippines, Panasonic aims to expand these initiatives, primarily across ASEAN. The company will work to establish systems tailored to the regulatory frameworks and market conditions of each country and region, enabling home appliances to remain in use longer and ensuring their proper collection, refurbishment, and recycling. Through these efforts, Panasonic will maximize the value of home appliances and resources and contribute to the realization of a circular economy.

■Vietnam: Examining a collection scheme for used air conditioners, with a view to recycling them and using the recycled materials in Panasonic products

Vietnam introduced Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements for electrical and electronic products in January 2025, creating a need for systems that ensure the proper collection of used home appliances and facilitate resource circulation.

Against this backdrop, PV will collaborate with Cao Phong Co., Ltd., a major local home appliance retailer, to launch a pilot project to collect used air conditioners on October 8, 2026. Customers who purchase Panasonic products at Cao Phong stores can register to have their used air conditioners purchased when replacing them with new ones. The project will accept products from Panasonic and other manufacturers and aims to collect 500 to 1,000 units by the end of March 2027.

Through the project, PV will examine methods for collecting used air conditioners through the retailer's sales network and assess the operational and commercial feasibility of establishing a sustainable collection scheme.

Panasonic is considering dismantling the collected air conditioners in the future, sorting their components by material, and recovering them for use as recycled materials. Panasonic will also consider expanding the project to other home appliances and using the resulting recycled materials in its products manufactured in Vietnam.

■Philippines: Examining the collection, refurbishment, and recycling of used air conditioners

In the Philippines, PMPC plans to collaborate with a major local home appliance retailer to launch a pilot project to collect used air conditioners in October 2026. The project will accept products from Panasonic and other manufacturers and aims to collect 500 to 1,000 units by the end of March 2027. The project will examine methods for collecting used air conditioners through the retailer's sales network, recycling the collected units, and assess the feasibility of using the resulting recycled materials in PMPC products. PMPC will also assess the feasibility of selling the collected air conditioners as refurbished products.

Cooling performance testing of a Panasonic Refresh refurbished refrigerator (Philippines)

As part of its efforts to extend the useful life of home appliances, PMPC conducted a pilot project in November 2025 involving the sale of 80 refurbished refrigerators. In September 2026, PMPC launched another pilot project under which refrigerators returned due to initial defects or other issues are refurbished in accordance with stringent quality standards and sold as Panasonic Refresh products through a direct-to-consumer website. The products are graded according to their condition and sold with a one-year warranty from the date of purchase. In this way, the company gives home appliances a second life rather than discarding them, while providing more customers with access to high-quality appliances.

■Bringing Japan-developed expertise in refurbishment and resource circulation to ASEAN

In Japan, Panasonic offers Panasonic Factory Refresh products, which are refurbished products inspected by Panasonic and sold with warranties. The company also collects and dismantles used home appliances for recycling, enabling iron, copper, plastics, and other materials to be recovered and reused. Drawing on the expertise it has developed through these initiatives in home appliance refurbishment and quality control, as well as in the collection and recycling of used home appliances, Panasonic will examine resource circulation systems suited to the respective market conditions in Vietnam and the Philippines.

Panasonic Group Environmental Initiatives

The Panasonic Group has set forth its long-term environmental vision, "Panasonic GREEN IMPACT (PGI)," with the aim of achieving both a better life and a sustainable global environment for all. Under PGI, Panasonic Group strives towards achieving virtually net zero CO2 emissions(*1) from its own operations by 2030, and will contribute to reducing more than 300 million tons of reduced and avoided CO2 annually, which is equivalent to about 1 percent of total global emissions(*2) by 2050. The group also works to realize a circular economy in its business activities, so that its resource efficiency further contributes to decarbonization and reduces the consumption of limited natural resources.

*1 Net zero factories that the Group is working to achieve refer to factories that emit substantially zero CO2 by utilizing credits to offset CO2 emissions derived from fossil fuels with combining the promotion of energy-saving technologies, productivity improvement, etc. and the promotion of the use of renewable energy.

*2 More than 300 million tons annually, equivalent to about 1 percent of total global emissions: Based on 2020 energy-derived CO2 emissions (Source: IEA) with the CO2 reduction contribution based on 2020 standards, which is the starting point for PGI.
