Guanacaste, Costa Rica - Panasonic established the biggest* HIT solar system project in Latin America and the largest one in Costa Rica, which deliver 5MW and consists in 15,456 HIT panels. It is located in Juanilama, in Belen de Carrillo, Santa Cruz, in the northern Pacific province of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The project is for the energy distribution of the Company Coopeguanacaste, R.L.
This project was implemented through a bilateral agreement between the government of Japan and Costa Rica, called "Joint Crediting Mechanism" (JCM), which promotes the fight against climate change by applying clean technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It can generate 9 GWH of energy per year, also may archive a reduction of about 1,500 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year, which is the equivalent of planting 5,350 trees. It means that it is a large contribution to the environment and to the country's goal of reducing its carbon footprint; therefore it is a step forward in order to achieve the environmental goals results.
This project was achieved through the MGM Sustainable Energy Fund (MSEF), a private equity fund that promotes energy efficiency and renewable energy projects in Latin America.
The launching event was held in September 14th, with attendance of important environmental and government institutions, which follows:
Mr. Edgar Gutierrez - Minister of Environment and Energy of Costa Rica
Mr. Miguel Gomez - General Manager of Coopeguanacaste, R. L.
Mr. Elias Espinoza Campos - President of the Board of Directors of Coopeguanacaste, R. L.
Mr. Taijiro Kimura - Advisor of Japan Embassy
Mrs. Adriana Montoya - Representant of MGM
Miguel Angel Gómez Corea, General Manager of Coopeguanacaste R.L. mentioned that this project is extremely important for them because through it, they will contribute towards the country´s national plan, named "Plan País" (Country Plan), to attain carbon neutrality and it will make possible to collaborate with the efforts to diversify the energy sources of the country´s energy matrix with renewable resources.
* As of January, 2018. It is the biggest installation when compared to others HIT Solar Panels installed by Panasonic in Latin America (internal research).
