The DNA of IEEE^*2 Milestone-recognized technology opens new possibilities for video expression

Osaka, Japan, July 29, 2026 – Following the recognition of the image stabilization technology—originally adopted in the “PV-460,” the world’s first^*1 consumer video camera equipped with image stabilization, which was commercialized in 1988—as an IEEE Milestone for its historic technical achievement in the fields of electrical, electronic, and information technology, Panasonic is pleased to announce that this technology has been carried forward into today’s “LUMIX” digital cameras.

The PV-460, born as the world’s first^*1 practical image stabilization technology, significantly improved video quality during handheld shooting and opened up new possibilities for video equipment. This innovative technological concept has become a standard feature in various video devices, including film cameras, digital cameras, and smartphones; LUMIX is, the prime example, and it serves as the foundation for the advanced image stabilization systems found in LUMIX cameras.

Today’s LUMIX cameras achieve high-performance shooting for both stills and video through features such as “Dual I.S.”—which combines in-lens and in-body image stabilization—and advanced stabilization technologies for video recording. Underlying these technologies is the same vision that has guided development since the PV-460’s inception: “to deliver greater freedom of visual expression to more people.”

Even today, as a pioneer in image stabilization, Panasonic continues to advance this technology every day. In Panasonic’s imaging devices—including the LUMIX series—image stabilization is incorporated into a wide range of models as a key feature that supports both detailed still photography and stable video recording, earning high praise from users who demand the highest quality in their photos and videos.

In recent years, the shooting styles of video creators and photographers have changed significantly. Amid growing demand for high-quality video production with small crews or even single-person operations—without relying on gimbals or large equipment—and for capturing high-resolution photos using highly mobile shooting styles, image stabilization technology has evolved from a mere shooting aid into a core technology that enhances the creative freedom of photographic and creative expression.

38 years after its invention, the world’s first^*1 image stabilization technology continues to evolve. The legacy of an IEEE Milestone-recognized innovation lives on across Panasonic’s imaging products—from LUMIX digital cameras to professional remote camera systems—supporting creators around the world in their pursuit of new visual expression.
