Osaka, Japan, August 26, 2024 – Panasonic Holdings Corporation (Panasonic HD) announced an exhibit in The Land of NOMO pavilion area of the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan (Expo 2025) that will allow visitors to experience the circular economy society of the future where people and nature work together. This area, titled “Earth,” is slated to feature five themes and under-development technology. After conducting demonstration tests and other experiments, Panasonic HD will prepare the technologies for exhibit production among other work from November.
At Expo 2025, Panasonic HD is set to present The Land of NOMO, with the stated concept of, “Set your heart and mind free, and the world will open up.” The Panasonic Group has made it its mission to realize “an ideal society offering material and spiritual affluence.” To this end, the company conceived of The Land of NOMO with the idea that “how you perceive something changes considerably based on your mindset,” and that “minds and objects are like mirrors.” The Land of NOMO’s tagline is “Unlock your nature,” and the concept aims to give children “strength to believe in themselves and the courage to take the first step.”
In line with the Group’s long-term environmental vision, Panasonic GREEN IMPACT, which strives to achieve a sustainable global environment, The Land of NOMO area construction, exhibition work and operations will utilize materials recycled from home electronics and factory waste.
The Land of NOMO area consists of the “Unlock” experience area, supported by the “Earth” area. The Unlock area aims to provide children with an experience that frees them from their assumptions and unleashes their hidden power. In the Earth area, Panasonic HD aims to create an exhibition space where people can think together about a better future in the context of the 720° connection where the 360° cycles of human and natural activities interact and circle around each other. Specifically, the exhibition will present under-development technologies such as cyanobacteria (photosynthetic microorganisms), perovskite solar cells, plant-derived cellulose fiber, biolight, and biophilic technologies, which are being worked on with the collaboration of Panasonic HD partners and incorporating children’s ideas. It will present an opportunity for guests to experience a new relationship between human activity and nature, achieving a conceptual 720° circulation. Children visiting The Land of NOMO will have the opportunity to experience a future in which people and nature expand the potential of each other through the intuitive experience of touch and smell.
■Cyanobacteria (photosynthetic microorganisms)
Unlocking the future of food with photosynthetic microorganisms
Here, Panasonic HD introduces an idea that utilizes cyanobacteria, a type of photosynthetic microorganism, to improve food productivity.
In this area, visitors can see fruits and vegetables grow vigorously. The exhibition will enable visitors to feel the resilience of nature and to experience the “720° cycle” that enables sustainable food production while reducing negative environmental impact through the productive use of CO2.
■Perovskite solar cells
Unlocking the future of energy with “power-generating glass”
Here, Panasonic HD introduces the idea of using Perovskite solar cells – “power-generating glass” – to deliver not only renewable energy to the masses but also sunlight through the trees to plants and microorganisms on the ground, all in harmony with modern urban landscapes.
At this exhibition, visitors can experience the freedom of a design that blends into the urban landscape through suspended objects, as well as hands-on exhibits that incorporate artistic sensibilities into perovskite solar cells. Visitors will be able to experience a “720° cycle” through a symbiotic relationship between power generation and plants in urban landscapes.
■kinari – Plant-derived cellulose fiber
Unlocking the future of manufacturing with biodegradable materials
Panasonic HD will introduce ideas for reducing the use of petroleum-based plastics, such as by showcasing the potential for a variety of daily necessities that combine high strength and good design with the use of a new grade of biodegradable cellulose fiber, called “kinari,” with enhanced reusability and strength.
At the exhibition, hands-on accessories in a number of shapes, created from workshops attended by children and fabricated by 3 printers, will be on display. The content of the exhibition will give visitors a sense of new manufacturing possibilities, as well as the “720° cycle,” which maintains and improves functionality while also being environmentally friendly without leaving any waste behind.
*Co-creation partner: Sekisai Co. (design and manufacturing of 3D printing)
■“Biolight” luminescent bacteria
Unlocking the future of lighting with bioluminescent bacteria
At Expo 2025, Panasonic HD aims to accumulate experience in the long-term cultivation of luminescent microorganisms and to introduce ideas that will trigger discussions about the application of lighting in the future that will color daily lives, and change the nature of light itself.
At the exhibition, a hands-on experience will guide visitors to observe the microorganisms emitting light by feeding oxygen into a tank in which they are cultured. Through this exhibit, visitors will be able to experience the fluctuations of living organisms and their connections with human life. Visitors can experience the “720° cycle” that enables symbiosis with luminescent microorganisms while making human activity more colorful.
■Biosensory dome
Unlocking a circular economy where nature and human activity combine
Panasonic HD aims to introduce an idea for a dome that brings together the concept of biophilic design, which reduces noise while allowing visitors to feel the comfort of experiencing a natural environment through their senses. This space hopes to lead visitors to a state of harmony between relaxation and moderate concentration, encouraging self-dialogue and self-liberation.
In addition to light and sound technologies, the venue will create a space that pleasantly stimulates the five senses by using mycelium as a building material in the form of panels with natural scents and textures. Visitors will experience a deep sense of relaxation, sharpen their senses and sensibilities, and experience a sense of oneness with nature. Panasonic HD aims to provide a place where visitors can “become aware of themselves in a connected world” while experiencing the comfort of nature, and where they will have an opportunity to think deeply about the world of the “720° cycle.”
*Co-creation partner: BIOTA Corporation (creation of mycelium panels)
Panasonic HD aims to accelerate its efforts to make children's futures richer and more hopeful through activities such as the Unlock experience at The Land of NOMO pavilion, the Earth exhibition area that embodies ideas for a future society, and an online co-creation platform that will continue to connect with children after Expo 2025 closes.
