Vision Statement from the Regional Representatives for Japan

The barrier that the finalist from Japan, Kento Yokose, has selected to overcome is "going beyond spectatorship to experience the splendor of sports." At the "SPORTS CHANGE MAKERS Preliminary Event in Mirror Field" held on March 9, 2021, he explained a part of his idea that he created something based on his own experiences to boost sports enjoyment for children and create something that they will remember in the future. We introduce the full text and circumstance below.

To reintroduce myself, my name is Kento Yokose, the regional representative for Japan. Although I can't disclose too much about my competition idea today, I'd like to talk a little about how I arrived at this idea.

We just watched messages from the three other regional representative teams. There is one key difference between my proposal as a representative of Japan and the ideas and proposals of the other teams. I participate in this project as an individual, not as a team. For that reason, when I started this project, I reflected on my past. I used to play soccer all the time when I was younger, so a lot of my memories and reminiscence are incorporated into the background and emotions of this project.

It's been 10 to 20 years since I played sports regularly, but I look back at the days I played soccer, and I think about the most memorable and enjoyable moments-the moments I felt the beauty of soccer and sports. And those moments weren't watching professionals play on TV. They were playing soccer with my friends until the sun set over the soccer field. Or kicking the ball around on my day off at the park with friends and people I just met. Sometimes we'd take a break to play games in the shade or to eat. That type of casual, everyday communication is exactly at the heart of my appreciation for sport.

So, when I started thinking about this project, I selected children as the target. I wanted to create an opportunity for the children of 2021, who are enjoying sports just like I did when I was younger. I wanted to create something for them so that they can enjoy sports even more. I'd like to help them experience sports in such a way that, in 10 to 20 years, they can look back on this memory and sporting experience, and remember it as something very precious and irreplaceable. I participated in this project with this goal in mind, and have made improvements to my idea over the past year with members of various teams.

August is just around the corner. Tough global circumstances continue, but I expect to maintain my original concept and experiences, and build out the presentation to reach and appeal to more people.
