Football is a sport full of emotion. Unfortunately, in some cases, this can lead to extreme behavior, creating an atmosphere that scares away normal fans and families. Panasonic was able to provide a solution that helps create safety and provide peace of mind for all the fans.
In Denmark, there have been a number of incidents of dangerous behavior by rowdy fans in football stadiums. At entrance gates, security guards check all fans against blacklists, but troublemakers often sneak in by wearing sunglasses, wearing hats or scarves, or by changing their facial hair. As a result, they continued to create trouble and danger.
An engineer from Panasonic in Denmark offered an idea to solve this problem by utilizing facial recognition technology, which Panasonic had been developing for over 30 years and was already being used around the world.
The first test went well, but the Football Association needed a next-generation facial recognition system that went beyond existing technology to identify people in disguise while complying EU's strict privacy protection regulations. That was not easy but Panasonic's R&D team gladly took on the challenge.
Panasonic continued to work closely with the stadium's IT staff to develop a new system to meet their needs. After two years, the system was finally approved by the Danish Data Protection Agency. This is the first time a facial recognition system has been approved under the EU's strict privacy protection regulations in Denmark. The system has begun successfully stopping blacklisted people, even when they attempt to disguise themselves.
Panasonic strives to develop and provide solutions that help create safety and comfort in the daily lives of people around the world.
