Panasonic Wins Order for Tunnel Electrostatic Precipitator
(Air Cleaning) Systems for the Madrid M30 Motorway

--- Applying technology proven in Japan to global markets ---

Tokyo, Japan - Panasonic, the leading brand for which Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. is known, today announced that it has received an order for electrostatic precipitator (air cleaning) systems to be installed and used in the works to expand the M30, the orbital motorway in the city of Madrid, Spain. Panasonic sealed the contract with the general contractors in charge of the works, Dragados S.P.L. and Ferrovial, on June 14.

Panasonic España S.A. has received this order for the systems, which include electrostatic precipitators, high voltage generators, washing systems, water treatment systems, and control panels. Matsushita Ecology Systems Co., Ltd. in Japan, a subsidiary of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., will be responsible for the design and production of these systems.

"With the increasing amount of traffic in towns and cities, more new roads are being built underground. In order to reduce the effect on the environment, there is growing demand for electrostatic precipitator (air cleaning) systems to purify emission gases," comments Matsushita Ecology Systems Co., Ltd. President Tameshige Hirata. "This order proves that Panasonic's technology has been highly recognized based on its achievements over the years. We at Panasonic will continue to strengthen systems business like this worldwide."

The works to expand the Madrid M30 orbital motorway include an expanded distance of 99 km - of which 56 km is tunnels - the installation of new tunnels, interchanges, underground water pipes, and green belt construction, with a total cost of 3.7 billion euros (approximately 520 billion JPY). This major urban renewal project aims to reduce the volume of traffic within Madrid City center, and to improve the urban infrastructure and the environment for the city's inhabitants, and it is expected to greatly invigorate the local economy. The works have been divided into north, south, east, and west regions, and of the south and west regions currently in progress, Panasonic has received orders for half of the west region (28km). Processing capacity of the air will be 1,670 cubic meters per second, to be evacuated from 9 stations.

Panasonic has supplied electrostatic precipitators, the major component of these systems, to 52 sites in 27 tunnels within Japan since 1979, and currently boasts the top share in the field in the country. Panasonic is expanding this proven technology to the global market, and in 2005 completed the installation of a similar system in the Hai Van Tunnel in Vietnam. The M30 order in Madrid is the first Panasonic air cleaning system to be installed in Europe - the company expects to further expand such installations in other European and Asia Pacific countries.

Electrostatic precipitators
Electrostatic precipitators are particulate collection devices that remove particles from the air by ionising the particles when air is passed through polar plated with high voltage. Using this highly efficient system, over 90 percent of the particles can be eliminated, making it ideal for improving internal and external environment of underground tunnels.
