Company / Press Release
Osaka, Japan – Panasonic Holdings Corporation (Panasonic HD) today announced that it has developed the prototype of the building integrated Perovskite photovoltaics glass, and started the long-term implementation demonstration project including technical tests lasting more than a year at the newly constructed model house “Future Co-Creation FINECOURT III” in the Fujisawa Sustainable Smart Town (Fujisawa SST), Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.
Panasonic HD defines Perovskite photovoltaics as “Energy-Generating Glasses” in our town and life. Panasonic HD aims to both generate renewable energy and harmonize with cityscape, as well as reducing CO2.
Aiming to improve energy conversion and reliability through the demonstration, Panasonic HD accelerate establishment of the technologies for practical application in new markets.
* Regarding glass integrated Photovoltaic (As of August 31, 2023, surveyed by Panasonic)
Global demand of photovoltaics for renewable energy is rising, aiming to carbon neutral and decarbonization. However, the available space installing solar cells is limited in urban area. To overcome such limitation, the installation of solar cells on windows and walls are needed. There have been challenges in terms of transparency and design by using conventional Silicon-based solar cells when it comes to installing them on glass surfaces such as windows.
The glass integrated Perovskite solar cells developed by Panasonic HD will make such problem solved. It will contribute the significant increasing of on-site power generation including urban area. From the perspective of local power generation and consumption, it is also expected to contribute to the resilience of power supply chain, especially during natural disasters.
Location:
Newly constructed model house in Fujisawa SST “Future Co-Creation FINECOURT III”
Balcony faced on south-southeast
Period:
Until November 29th, 2024 (Planned)
Sizes:
Implemented in the balcony of W 3,876 mm and H 950 mm
Demonstration points:
Verification of the Perovskite solar cells with gradational and transparent design, and Long-term durability
Collaborators:
Mitsui Fudosan Residential Co., Ltd.
Our goal is to achieve glass integrated Perovskite solar cells, which are designed to directly form the photovoltaic layer on the glass substrate, enabling the creation of "power-generating glass" building materials that can be used in various architectural structures. Panasonic HD aims to utilize this technology in a wide range of buildings. By combining our original inkjet coating method and laser processing technology, we can enhance flexibility in terms of size, transparency, and design, allowing for customization according to specific requirements.
Glass integrated Perovskite solar cells developed by Panasonic HD are designed to harmonize with the design of various architectural structures as "power-generating glass." We aim to offer our solution as an advanced and innovative choice in the architecture and energy industries, providing a new and cutting-edge solution that complements the design of the buildings themselves.
Panasonic HD have the world’s highest level conversion efficiency for a perovskite module of more than 800 cm2 size; 17.9% certified with third party, which is almost equal with conventional crystal Silicon module.
A part of this result was carried out as part of the project of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) .
Panasonic GREEN IMPACT (PGI) is the Panasonic Group’s long-term environmental vision for realizing a better life and a more sustainable global environment. Under PGI, Panasonic Group is committed to achieving virtually net zero CO2 emissions from its own operations by 2030 and creating an impact of more than 300 million tons1) of CO2 emissions reduction—approximately 1 percent of total current global emissions of 33 billion tons2)—by 2050. This project will have an impact on the energy transformation of society.

Fujisawa SST is a suburban smart town developed on the site of a former Panasonic plant in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and is a project promoted by Fujisawa City and the Fujisawa SST Council (Representative Director: Panasonic Group), which consists of 18 organizations. The project aims to solve social and regional issues through the creation of new services by introducing a mechanism for co-creation among residents, companies, local governments, universities, and other organizations involved in the town.
