The CEATEC INNOVATION AWARDS, "As Selected by U.S. Journalists":
"cocotto" Child-care Partner Robot - Home Category
"Judges unanimously selected Panasonic's cocotto as the winner of Home category. The cocotto is a robot capable of simple conversations, designed as an educational companion for children. It was an unconventional approach for this robot to have a spherical body, but it is unnecessary for a robot to have a human type of body when you want a child to feel comfortable. The cocotto also has simple but cute expression of eyes and a mouth. Again a robot does not have to have an emotionless face to be a friend. It is very important for a child of pre-school to develop vocabulary, so one of very important features of cocotto is to be able to expand conversational ability through AI and mobile application. Judges have faith in Panasonic to commercialize this technology for parents in need." --- Comments from Judging Panel
Living-body radar using microwave - Consumer IoT Category
"It's a fact: When you have elderly or a newborn in your home, it's impossible to personally continuously monitor them at all hours of the day. One indicator of trouble is location and position. For example, if an elderly person has fallen and needs help, a baby is lying down yet hasn't moved. Time is critical when an incident occurs. Even more so in "private" areas that can't be easily monitored, such as the restroom, or behind the privacy of closed doors. Using a wireless microwave technology, Panasonic's Living Body Radar can monitor residents without requiring any intrusive camera or on-body monitors. Quick, actionable event alerts can be provided wirelessly and instantly, over a wide area, possibly saving lives. Other applications of this product include wirelessly monitoring an area for movement, and specifically where that movement has come from, without requiring expensive camera image processing. The Living Body Radar is another shining example of Panasonic's passion for furthering the next generation of family safety and security." --- Comments from Judging Panel
"CaloRieco" Calorie/Nutrition Checker - Consumer Electronics Category
"I don't know about you--but I have a love affair with food. It's a love affair that brings me a great deal of pleasure--but could be deadly. Too many calories, too many carbs can lead to obesity and heart disease. Wouldn't it be great if we knew more about the food we eat in our homes? That's the idea behind Panasonic's CaloRieco - It's a countertop device. Just put in the food you are planning to consume into the CaloRieco and using " infra-red technology" the CaloRieco reveals the food's calories, protein, fat and carbohydrate info. It all appears on its screen in seconds--and then saves the information for the future. Whether it's store bought food or grandma's homemade honey apple pie--you finally know what you're about to eat. So will the CaloRieco end my love affair with food? I doubt it. BUT I think it will certainly give me "food for thought." Ladies and Gentleman--it's my honor to present this year's winner in the Consumer Electronics category--Panasonic's CaloRieco" --- Comments from Judging Panel

This is the first technology in the world to acquire the international safety standard certification for life support robots (ISO 13482), realizing a high level of safety at a low price as a human-care robot.
