As part of its long-term environmental vision Panasonic GREEN IMPACT, Panasonic Group is promoting an initiative to upcycle factory offcuts into innovative new products to reduce emissions and promote efficient use of resources.
The initiative is focused on artificial marble offcuts produced during the manufacture of kitchen countertops. Because the material is highly durable, secondary processing of the offcuts to make them into other shapes is not practical. The team’s solution was to develop a database platform where data about the shape of the offcuts could be stored and then accessed by creators who would then use the offcuts “as is.”
After a successful exhibition of the initiative, Panasonic has collaborated with various parties and even created its own product prototype using the offcuts with a view to potential commercialization. Project lead Tooru Wada wants to refine this ecosystem until it can be applied sustainably throughout society: “All products have a lifespan. I want to create an ecosystem where products at the end of their lifespan can be upcycled.”

On the occasion of his annual New Year message to employees around the globe, Panasonic Group CEO Yuki Kusumi celebrated the progress made over the past year while encouraging his colleagues to remain committed to challenging themselves—and the organization—to reach new heights in 2023. Kusumi reiterates his strong desire not just to complete the two-year initiative to strengthen Panasonic’s competitiveness, but to do so while gaining an edge over the competition.
“Reflecting on the past is important, but if we are always looking back, then we won’t be able to move forward. Ultimately, the only thing we can change is the future. To get even one step closer to our ambitious vision for Panasonic, we should focus on the road ahead and approach the improvements that need to be made with a sense of urgency. The start of 2023 is as good a time as any to change our approach—so let us resolve to do so.”
