Among the various concerns present today, surging energy demand is one of the most pertinent issues. Increasing energy reliance has led to the energy supply being far less than the actual demand. With India's energy demand likely to increase by more than five-fold by the year 2030, chronic electricity shortages are expected to worsen.
However, the silver lining is the fact that the country has one of the highest potentials for an effective use of renewable energy. Solar energy is expected to play a significant role in addressing India's energy needs.
Under Panasonic's global "100 Thousand Solar Lanterns Project," the company has donated a total of 9,000 lanterns to the Indian community - 5,000 last year and recently, 4,000 solar lanterns were donated on 18th March. Panasonic has collaborated with six leading NGO's (non-profit organizations) which primarily include the World Health Partners, Plan International India, World Vision India, Care India, Japan Lutheran Evangelical Association and Society for All Round Development (SARD) in the areas of Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal and Haryana.
With the ability to double up as a light and power source at night, the 4,000 solar lanterns will facilitate the provision of medical care service at night in order to promote healthcare campaigns for poor and less privileged Indian families, and conduct eco education classes in the evening for children. With the objective of fostering a better life, this project will also support economic independence of people living in off-grid areas.
