Press Release

Panasonic to Expand Lineup of OLED Lighting Devices with New Daylight White and Natural White Colors

With its range of colored OLED lighting devices, Panasonic is aiming to provide lighting with high level color rendering, high luminance and a long lifespan lighting that can meet the needs of a variety of applications.

Osaka, Japan - Panasonic Corporation today announced its plans to release two new colored OLED lighting panels and modules (daylight white, 5000K, and natural white, 4000K) in addition to the currently available bulb color (3000K) OLED panels and modules, expanding the company's lineup of OLED lighting devices. The approximately 2 mm thick OLED lighting panel will be released on July 20th, 2012, by Panasonic Idemitsu OLED Lighting Co., Ltd. (PIOL), which is a joint venture between Panasonic and Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. Panasonic Corporation Eco Solutions Company will release the easy-to-install OLED lighting module with a built-in control circuit in mid August, 2012.

Both products feature the world's highest-level (*1) color rendering (*2) (CRI>90) and high luminance (*3) with long life time (10,000 hours, LT70). This excellent balance of specifications is well suited for lighting applications. In addition, due to Panasonic's sight angular dependence technology, the panels keep their color uniformity regardless of the viewing angle. The panels have an efficiency of 26~30 lm/W and the modules approximately 17 lm/W. The OLED lighting devices are available in three colors, including daylight white which is in high demand in the Japanese market, to meet the needs of the lighting applications.

With its range of colored OLED lighting devices, Panasonic is aiming to promote the soft and even lighting that can only be found with OLED lighting devices to the world.

Key Features of OLED Lighting Panel

(1) Achieved both the world's highest level color rendering (CRI >90) and luminance.
Even with a color temperature of 5000K or 4000K, the panels offer high color rendering (CRI >90) and high luminance, equivalent to 3000K products suitable for lighting applications.
Luminance: 2,600 cd/m² (5000K), 2800cd/m² (4000K), 3000cd/m² (3000K)
Note: The OLED lighting panel alone does not emit light. A connection with separate power / control circuits is required.

(2) Higher efficiency (26~30 lm/W) and longer lifetime (10,000 hours, LT70) than incandescent lamps
The OLED lighting panel as a surface light source and offers luminous efficiency 26~30 lm/W which is higher than the efficiency of general incandescent lamps (15 lm/W). With LT70, the panel provides about 10 times the product life cycle of an incandescent lamp (1,000 hours). The light source is free of mercury. Also, as the light is UV-free, it only has a marginal impact on radiated objects.
Efficiency:27 lm/W (5000K), 26 lm/W (4000K),30 lm/W (3000K)

(3) Panel unit has a thickness of approximately 2 mm
The OLED panel is a next-generation thin surface light source, which significantly expands design potential, allowing for ultra-thin, light weight devices and fixtures.

Key Features of OLED Lighting Module

(1) Features Color rendering (CRI >90) and luminance necessary for lighting applications, while also achieving high efficiency and long lifespan.
The OLED lighting module offers color rendering (CRI >90) suitable for lighting applications, as well as achieving high luminance, high efficiency (17 lm/W), and long lifespan (10,000 hours).
Luminance:2520 cd/m² (5000K), 2700 cd/m² (4000K), 3000 cd/m² (3000K)
Efficiency: 17 lm/W (5000K/4000K/3000K)

(2) Easy-to-install module with a thickness of approximately 9mm and a frame approximately 11mm wide
Suitable for thin lighting fixtures that blend with buildings or equipment. Improved freedom in fixture design by minimizing the non light-emitting parts (the width of the frame).
Note: OLED Lighting Module alone does not emit light without a separately available power circuit.

(3) "Slide-in" structure for easy panel replacement
The "slide-in" structure allows easy replacement of the light emitting section

Hook the tab to the
flange on the panel.

  1. Among volume production OLED lighting panels offering both high color rendering and luminance as of July 1st, 2012 (Source: PIOL survey)
  2. The color rendering is evaluated by how faithful colors of objects are reproduced compared to the reference light and is represented by the average color rendering index of Ra.
  3. Luminance is the luminous intensity (brightness of the light source) per unit area of the light and is represented by cd/m² (candela per sq.m.)
