Colosseum Lit Up to Mark 150th Anniversary of the Italy-Japan Diplomatic Ties

May 17, 2016

Rome, Italy - The establishment of diplomatic ties between Japan and Italy is said to be August 25, 1866, the day the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Japan and Italy was concluded, making this year its 150th anniversary. Panasonic sponsored the commemorative Light Event, which took place in Rome, Italy to mark the 150th Anniversary of the Diplomatic Ties between Japan and Italy. The event was held at the Colosseum, a cultural heritage that represents Italy and its history.

The Light Event, marking the 150th Anniversary of the Diplomatic Ties between Japan and Italy, was sponsored by Panasonic and held between May 11 and 13. It was an event in which messages of light themed "Love to People, Love to the Earth" were projected onto the large ancient ruins of the Colosseum, with Panasonic providing nine super high brightness Digital Light Processing [DLP(R)] projectors (PT-DZ21K).

The projectors were set up in the Roman Forum ruins, which are next to the Colosseum, irradiating outside wall of the Colosseum with a video work studded with words that meant "love" in various languages.

The Colosseum is an amphitheater built during the Roman Empire and a structure that represents ancient Rome. Its construction started in 70 A.D. and was completed at the same time as the completion of the neighboring Baths of Titus in 80 A.D. Even after 1,900 years, the Colosseum is still crowded with a large number of tourists, as a major Italian historic landmark as well as a symbol of ancient Rome.

The light event, in which a 10minute long visual program was repeatedly screened between 20:00 and 24:00 after sunset, revived the large ancient ruins with a dazzling array of light up, dreamlike production and dynamic music, soothing the heart and mind of the visiting tourists.

This event was coproduced between Motoko Ishii, lighting designer, and her daughter, AkariLisa Ishii. Motoko Ishii is one of Japan's leading lighting designer, whose works have been represented on a wide scale not only in Japan but also in the world's urban landscape lighting. She designed the Tokyo Tower and Akashi Strait Bridge, and serves as a lighting design advisor for The Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Also, AkariLisa Ishii is an up and coming lighting designer living in Paris and has been widely involved in international lighting projects, from European monument architecture to planning a project for cities in entire Asia.

For the 150th anniversary reception party hosted by the Japanese Embassy, which was held at The St. Regis Rome Hotel on May 11 prior to the event, Their Imperial Highnesses Prince and Princess Akishino were invited along with the Italian government officials and media representatives. With Laurent Abadie, Panasonic Europe's CEO and Regional Head for Europe & CIS, also attending, it turned out to be a grand event that confirmed the friendship between Japan and Italy for the next 150 years.
