Encouraging Responsible Recycling in Singapore Through Heartland E-Waste Recycling Programme

Today, the accessibility of recycling bins placed around Singapore neighbourhoods have made recycling of general recyclables like aluminium cans, paper and plastic bottles, a breeze. Bulky home appliances, or white goods, on the other hand, are still a challenge to recycle due to its size and weight.

Panasonic News Portal Reporter Fizzah Introduces the Heartland E-waste Recycling Program

In order to cultivate the habit of safe and responsible recycling of home appliances and electronic waste (e-waste), the Heartland E-Waste Recycling Programme was launched in Singapore on 5th July by Panasonic Asia Pacific, South East Community Development Council (CDC), National Environment Agency (NEA), electrical and electronic retailer BEST Denki, e-waste recycler Cimelia, and public waste collector SembWaste. Running from July to December 2013, the pilot programme drives home the message that recycling is a shared responsibility. The programme provides a hassle-free platform for recycling home appliances and e-waste. It goes beyond the individual effort of recycling because for every e-waste recycled, energy efficient light bulbs will be donated to less privileged families in the South East district, promoting community engagement. Panasonic will be donating up to 5,000 energy efficient light bulbs under this programme.

Successful first collection!

On 14th July, the first e-waste collection drive took place. Residents were bringing in more e-waste than what the collection bins could contain. Response was overwhelming! The e-waste collected will be segregated and recycled in order to retrieve essential raw materials such as plastics and precious metals for the production of new products.

This Heartland E-Waste Recycling Programme aims to build communities with heightened awareness on e-waste recycling, and encourage more people to recycle their home appliances and e-waste in an environmentally sound manner.
