With a "humid subtropical" climate, Tokyo experiences extremely hot summers with temperatures reaching 35+ degrees across July and August. Such high temperatures can result in many people suffering and even dying from heatstroke.
- Panasonic installs Air Cooling Mist solution across various Tokyo venues in preparation of the Summer of 2020
- Unique two-fluid nozzle sprays ultra-fine "dry" mist that achieves a perceived temperature drop of up to 7 degrees Celsius
Tokyo, Japan - Panasonic Corporation has therefore announced it will be creating Cool Spots in the City of Tokyo, contributing to the creation of a comfortable, bustling city in the Summer of 2020. The Green Air Conditioner is an Air Cooling Mist solution which sprays an unrivalled silky fine mist, cooling the air with negligable residue.
Already installed across various Tokyo venues, the Green Air Conditioner is part of Panasonic's commitment to contribute innovative solutions to achieve a Better Life, a Better World beyond 2020.
Protecting potential heat victims of the Tokyo Summer
Between May and September 2018, in Japan nearly 100,000 people required ambulance assistance for such health threat according to the announcement made by the Fire and Disaster Management Agency on October 25, 2018.(*1)
In response to this temperature challenge, Panasonic is offering Air Cooling Mist solutions that are suitable for outdoor installation such as at bus stops, sidewalks and entrances to venues.
The solution includes a rotating air curtain blower that uses a swirling airflow. This creates a dome-shaped cooling space with a diameter of 2 meters, which can easily keep up to five people cool at any one time.
In the 2m diameter cooling area created by the solution, the temperature can be lowered by 4 degrees(*2), which results in users experiencing a perceived decrease of about 7 degrees in bodily temperature(*3).

*3 The perceived temperature difference is calculated using the standard new effective temperature SET.
Smart cooling according to weather forecast
The Green Air Conditoner is also equipped with a remote monitoring and control system that can automatically control the spray according to local weather forecast data. This enables the solution to alter the spray flow rate according to the air temperature and stop automatically on rainy days and cool days.
Air Cooling Mist units have already been installed at Odaiba Rainbow Park, a popular tourist spot that overlooks Rainbow Bridge and the sandy beach facing Tokyo Bay, since July 2019.
Coming soon: An ultra-fine mist that's dry
Panasonic is introducing a new model, Green Air Conditioner Flex from September 2019. Emitting an ultra-fine dry mist, it can be easily attached to wall or pipe tent structures that have a power source.
The Panasonic Green Air Conditioner Flex sprays an incomparably-fine mist that evaporates quickly - and is so fine, it barely feels wet and doesn't dampens items such as newspapers or glasses even from a close distance of 0.6 meters. The mist is sprayed by Panasonic's unique two-fluid nozzle, and consists of water mist droplets of up to 6 micrometers - less than the thickest.
The solution is now under field test at several Tokyo metropolitan places including Tokyo Midtown Hibiya, and outside of Tokyo, such as Shin-Yokohama Station in Yokohama-shi and Kobe City.
It was also installed at the entrance at the beach volleyball tournament in July to provide a cool space for all athletes, spectators and park visitors as they entered the park Tokyo with great success.
Panasonic looks beyond 2020
Panasonic's commitment beyond 2020 includes seeking innovative ways to support A Better Life, A Better World for individuals, businesses and society.
Panasonic's Air Cooling Mist solution was demonstrated at four competition venues in the summer of 2019. In addition to the beach volleyball tournament in July, it was installed at both the boating and hockey competitions in August, and the Tokyo marathon course on September 15, 2019.
