Panasonic Develops New System LSI for Mobile Phones Based on Its Integrated Platform for Digital Appliances

Sample shipment from December 2006, allowing longer SD audio play time and improved graphic performance on mobile handsets

New System LSI for Mobile Phones Based on Its Integrated Platform for Digital Appliances (39KB)

Osaka, Japan -- Panasonic, the leading brand for which Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. is well known, announced today that it has developed a new system LSI for mobile phones by applying its second-generation Integrated Platform for Digital Appliances. The new LSI MN2CS0035 model can greatly improve the playing time of SD audio and the graphic processing performance on mobile handsets. The company will commence shipping product samples in December 2006.

The use of LSI technology enables the existence of multiple functioning on a single chip in cellular phones such as long time music and movie playback, high-performance 3D graphics, and mobile DTV (ISDB-T) viewing.

The new LSI product has the following features:

  1. Contributes to the use of software assets in different fields and cuts product development costs by adopting Integrated Platform architecture
  2. Realizes extended operation of various mobile applications including mobile DTV(ISDB-T) viewing, music playback, etc, and
  3. Realizes various stream processing and copyright protection functions.

The new product incorporates the following technologies:

  1. Panasonic in-house multimedia processor technology for digital appliances including scalable architecture and flexibility enabling mobile phone functions to match a variety of user requirements.
  2. High-performance AV media processing technology and 2D/3D graphics technology based on the ARM CPU core, multimedia processor, and dedicated graphics engine;, and low power consumption technology with multiple power reduction mechanisms; and
  3. Security technology that has realized robust security function by employing a CPU secure mode and variable cipher systems.

To develop the product, Panasonic needed to overcome some unique challenges. To provide the high-quality graphics capacity needed for high-performance games and extended music replay, it was necessary to add an application LSI dedicated to these functions. To also guarantee security of data (essential in cellular phone services) and to protect contents, such as music and images, it was necessary to use high-speed CPU processing or to add a dedicated LSI. With existing technologies there are challenges for manufacturing a cellular handsets with increasing component costs, PCB (printed circuit board) size, and power consumption. Panasonic solved the challenges by developing an innovative LSI based on the integrated platform that can now deliver a variety of applications on a single chip with low power consumption.
