Singapore, Singapore - Panasonic Corporation won the coveted Overall Brand Champion award at the PR Awards 2017 held March 23, 2017 in Singapore. This spectacular win also saw Panasonic receive 5 Gold Awards out of nominations in 6 different categories.

In addition to being honored as the Overall PR Awards Brand Champion, Panasonic took home Gold Awards for:

  • Best Regional PR Campaign
  • Best Use of Technology
  • Best Use of Broadcast/ Video
  • Best Direct-to-Consumer PR Campaign
  • Best B2B PR Campaign

The PR Awards is an annual event which brings together prominent brands and senior communications professionals to recognize the best PR campaigns and celebrate achievements in the industry across Southeast Asia.

The highlight of Panasonic's win was due to the "Panasonic Eclipse Live by Solar Power 2016" event and campaign. On March 9, 2016, Panasonic delivered a live broadcast documenting a 4-minute, total solar eclipse from Ternate, an island in eastern Indonesia, powered only by solar power.

The judging panel was impressed by Panasonic's live-streaming of the total solar eclipse drawn solely from solar energy. This positively showcased Panasonic's solar technology to a global audience and generated buzz, including among B2B and B2G audiences.

Mr. Hisao Tsugita in Groupwide Brand Communications Division of Panasonic Corporation, Creator and Project Head of the "Panasonic Eclipse Live by Solar Power" project, commented
"Social media and smartphones are spreading to nearly every corner of the world, so as a company, we need to explore new ways to express our brand. The "Panasonic Eclipse Live by Solar Power", our Internet live broadcast of the solar eclipse, an astronomical phenomenon that people all around the world are interested in, was chosen as the top winner of the PR Award. This is a good indication that our brand communication strategy is on the right track, so I am very happy to have won the award."

Activities with Power Supply Container

Using a Power Supply Container, now known as a Power Supply Station (a stand-alone photovoltaic power package), Panasonic was able to harness solar energy using 12 Panasonic HIT(R) solar modules with high conversion efficiency, and generated approximately 3kW of electricity by tapping renewable energy from the top of the container. This power was stored in 24 built-in lead-acid storage batteries which powered the Live Streaming System and the Panasonic LUMIX GH4 camera attached to a telescope to capture the spectacular moment.

This is the third time Panasonic broadcast a solar eclipse live. Unlike previous occasions where more time needed to be spent setting up the HIT(R) solar modules, the new Power Supply Station's portability allowed it to be assembled quickly with minimal construction work.

Prior to the live broadcast project in Ternate, Panasonic developed and introduced the Power Supply Station to other parts of Indonesia. The first container was installed in July 2014 at the National Elementary School Karimunjawa 01 located on a remote island of Indonesia to improve the educational environment for students and teachers. Following its success, a second container was introduced in July 2015 at another elementary school in the mountainous region of West Java Province to enhance both study and water supply conditions.

Recently, in 2016, Panasonic provided the Power Supply Station to the non-electrified mountainous village of Yin Ma Chaung in Myanmar. Having light at night helps villagers move around safely, whereas the presence of poisonous snakes was a great threat in the dark.

In a world where there are still places with limited access to electricity, Panasonic hopes its energy sustainability projects will provide a better life, a better world, and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations.
