Panasonic Holdings, in cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has donated 100 Panasonic solar lanterns to women and girls living without electricity in Orinie Village in Kajiado County, Kenya. The donation was conducted through Kenya’s National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC).
The initiative aims to help eliminate gender-based violence (GBV), which causes up to 3.7% loss of a country’s GDP*, by encouraging women’s economic independence and helping build knowledge and confidence through electrification.
“The solar lanterns offer great hope to women and girls… The lanterns mean that they can also study at home, and are able to perform work at night at home to improve their income,” commented a female leader in Orinie Village**.
